Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the ability to question certain calls from the official, echoing the protocol currently in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system in place at all of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
