The Princess of Wales's Annual Christmas Musical Celebration Spotlights Unsung Heroes
Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at the iconic London venue, with a congregation comprising dignitaries, stars, and everyday helpers who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.
The sizable congregation will listen to a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from stars like Chiwetel Ejiofor and Kate Winslet.
A Theme of Compassion and Love
The focus of the concert, held in the atmospheric historic church on the afternoon, is compassion and demonstrating care for others.
In the audience are Anna and Jonathan Cordiner, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who established a foundation, a charity called Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to support families who have a youngster facing a life-limiting condition.
"The time, care and compassion you give, often quietly and unspoken, and without any hope for reward or acknowledgement, make an remarkable change to the circumstances of individuals," the Princess expressed in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.
A Gradual Return
The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to the public eye after her cancer diagnosis and chemotherapy, last month delivering her major oration since 2023, in which she talked about recognising the "discreet, frequently unseen labour of caregivers".
Music and Opportunity
Attendees entering the Abbey can listen to young musicians supported by the charitable trust Future Talent, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of musical tuition.
Carys Wood, aged 18, who plays the trumpet and is from Wales, has been helped by the trust, with funding assisting with instruments, tuition, and transportation expenses - and she said it was "incredible" to be taking part in the evening's event.
"Music can be very expensive," the musician remarked. She is now a student at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.
A Sisterly Duo
Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will likewise attend the Abbey. "I never thought I'd be able to play there in front of so many notable figures," she said.
Within the audience will be individuals spanning multiple eras.
That will encompass nine-year-old Saphia Turner, winner of a prize for youthful altruism, who produces drawings and undertakes charity feats to raise money for food banks.
Festive Decor and Performances
The Abbey has been festooned with handcrafted festive wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett assisting in their creation.
Among the musical performers will be Katie Melua, the Abbey's own choir and a Cornish sea shanty group, the Fisherman's Friends, who said the opportunity to perform was "the perfect culmination."
The Together at Christmas carol concert will be televised and shown on ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
